Montségur Castle, a UNESCO world heritage site
On 26 July 2026, Montségur Castle in Ariège was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is one of the eight sites that make up the ‘Capetian Royal Fortresses of Languedoc’, alongside the city of Carcassonne and the fortresses of Aguilar, Lastours, Peyrepertuse, Puilaurens, Quéribus and Termes.
This international recognition shines a spotlight on a site that is emblematic of Cathar history and a place we are fortunate to be able to introduce you to during our walking tour: The Best of the Cathar Castles, from Carcassonne to Foix.
Montségur, a major site in Cathar history
Perched atop its hill, Montségur is inextricably linked to the history of Catharism and the Albigensian Crusade. The site is notably associated with the siege of 1243–1244, at the end of which the fortress fell after several months of resistance. This episode, which was particularly significant in the history of the Cathar region, continues to contribute to Montségur’s strong historical and symbolic significance to this day.
But the site’s history does not end in the 13th century. The fortress we see today was rebuilt in the late Middle Ages, following the fall of the Cathar castrum. The present-day remains thus bear witness to several periods in the site’s history.
This is also what makes exploring Montségur so special on a hike: here, the path doesn’t just lead to a panoramic view. It helps you understand the region and the events that have profoundly shaped the history of the Ariège and the Cathar Country.
